Employees of the British Network Rail, which owns and operates the railway infrastructure in the country, as well as 14 railway operators, will go on strike on 1 October.
The strike, which will last 24 hours, will lead to an almost complete halt of rail traffic in the UK, writes the Financial Times newspaper.
The rail, maritime and other modes of transport (RMT) union, which is trying to secure higher wages and better working conditions for its members, said it had received no proposals from the industry to resolve the problem through negotiations.
Train drivers in the UK, affiliated with the Aslef union, are also set to go on strike on 1 October.
